#62 – 2013 Year-End Extravaganza

31 Dec

2013 Year End Extravaganza

Man, remember when 2013 started? That was like three weeks ago. And now it’s already over. We sat down with Mr. Blake Tyers (who you may remember from Episode 20), and, just like last year, drank 3 beers and listened to 3 songs. The beers are a big Belgian, an English ESB, and an American IPA. We pontificate on Russ playing Iron Maiden for his mother. The fact that all three songs are from English artists is purely coincidental. Happy New Year!

Episode Guide

26 Oct

1. I am right brained, which means I want to see all the data at once and identify my own patterns. I love maps.

2. At numerous times since the inception of this podcast, I have wanted to quickly reference a beer or a song or an artist that I know we’ve covered, and I haven’t had a quick way to locate and/or sort the information.

Look up and to the right. Yeah, right there between About and RSS. Permanent link, yo. I will no doubt use this link more than any of our listeners, but its potential to help any interested party quickly reference something we’ve covered in the past should be fairly obvious, you guys.

[I recommend episodes 13 and 20.]

#22 – Bridgeport Witch Hunt and NOFX

19 Oct

Bridgeport Witch Hunt

Behold, our first official attempt at being “seasonal.” It is October and we are drinking the Fall / Halloween themed Witch Hunt from Bridgeport. I suppose it is worth noting that this beer came out in early August, but WHATEVER.

The important part is that we are well into our favorite time of year, and we use colorful euphemisms to describe how this makes us feel. Russ also makes an attempt to give me a silent hand signal, you know, because we are live and unscripted, and [wet] hilarity ensues.

In the Russ Hates Everything department, it becomes apparent right from the start that Russ is still reeling from Episode 20. So I served up a song from the new NOFX album that I was pretty sure he would enjoy. By the end I had somehow volunteered to make him a mix tape.

These are crazy times we are living in, people.

#20 – Cisco Brewers Lady Of The Woods and Hydra Head Records

2 Oct

Second [AND FINAL] episode with Blake. Curse him and his damn sexy voice and insight.

As for the content, well, it has been about 3 episodes since I poked Russ with a stick, so what better time than the present to poke Russ with not one but two sticks? We start by drinking Lady of the Woods from Cisco Brewers The Woods series. It is a crisp, refreshing, yet complex, wine-barrel-aged creation … that also happens to be extremely sour. I have been apathetic about Cisco’s other offerings, but Lady of the Woods is a great beer.

We move along to [poorly] lament the demise of Hydra Head Records. Hydra Head was / is an institution. They are responsible for curating (and creating) some of the most heavy, dark, creepy, groovy, immense, challenging, crushingly beautiful music of the last 15-20 years. I gave Blake and Russ three bands to pick from: Botch, Isis, and Keelhaul. Listen to hear what they picked. The obscenity-laden tirade that results officially ruined this episode for Blake’s mom. Sorry, Blake’s mom.

Some other notes:

  • At a mind-numbing 27:24, episode 20 is almost 3 times as long as episode 12. I blame Blake. Won’t happen again. Until it happens again.
  • At 5:30, we roller blade through a brief conversation about asparagus pee. I did end up Googling it, and there isn’t a definitive answer regarding whose pee smells and who can actually smell that smelly pee. The most plausible explanation appears to be a cokctail of volatile organic compounds AND a genetic predisposition for (or against) smelling said cocktail of compounds. GROSS.
  • APPARENTLY I need to get better speakers with which to listen to the 1 Song portion of these clusters because the tinny little MacBook Pro speakers aren’t doing the music any favors. Leave a comment if you’d like to donate some AWESOME speakers and I’ll send you my address.
